PROJEKT
Vicksburg - Bandleader and Bass Guitarist, Moses Brown, was at Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS. It was 1982 when he decided to form a Southern style Rhythm & Blues Band: PROJEKT his dream was realized 22 years later.
Based in Brown’s his home town of Vicksburg, MS. PROJEKT is a familiar sight in venues all across the South and Middle America, East Coast, West Coast and many points in between. Interspersed in the musical journey, PROJEKT has released three albums, won top prizes in musical jams and battles in Jackson, MS. and elsewhere. The opening act for many of the outstanding blues and soul blues legends of today: Bobby Rush, Denise LaSalle, Lynn White, Bobby Blue Bland, Betty Wright, Little Milton, Ernie Johnson, Shirley Brown and Sir Charles B PROJEKT are the boss of backups. The band has recently toured with Chuck Strong and James Payne in their world tours. During most of the history of the Vicksburg River fest, PROJEKT has been there. Bandleader Moses Brown has also contributed to his hometown annual celebration of Juneteenth, bringing his experience from Texas to the Mississippi venue.
The Southern funk, rhythm and blues style band is hoping it will become a part of Vicksburg, MS. rich musical tradition of Artist, such as, Willie Dixon, Red Tops and Artie ABlues Boy@ White. In 1982, at Alcorn State University, a group of musicians got together to form a band to play at fraternity parties, and now 18 years later PROJEKT is about to release its second full CD, now stronger than ever and exploring new places. In addition to frat parties, PROJEKT musical journey has included winning the 1992 Battle of the Jams in Jackson, MS.
The PROJEKT Band has also had the chance to play for the legendary Percy Sledge at the University of Alabama Music Fest, and has also played back up for Bobby Rush on several occasions. The band has also performed in many different casinos including Ameristar, Rainbow and Bally’s in New Orleans, Long Star Casino in Greenville, MS. and now the group is about to lean from opening for others to having someone opening for them. Like David ACountry Doyle, an upcoming rap star of the family, PROJEKT has been exploding during 2002-2007. We are about to go to the next step in 2008-2009, said Moses Brown, who serves as the road manager, bass player, bandleader and is the owner of Brice Records. Brown still runs it all out of his small office on Second North Street, in Vicksburg, MS. but he is looking for a new building. PROJEKT plays a combination of funk and blues with the influences from bands like the Commodores, Kool & the Gang.
And with the last CD (Juke) “ Lay Me Down” “Children of Today” “Brand New Woman” are still getting radio play everywhere from Japan to North Carolina, and it is being added to play list across the country. Valerie McKnight, lead female vocalist, who has been performing music by stars such as, Keisha Brown, Tina Turner, Peggy Scott Adams, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Yolonda Adams, is now taking her own southern style all over the United States with an explosion. The mother of one is looking forward to going to another level in 2008-2009 as one of PROJEKT lead female vocalists. LaToya Hood, lead female vocalist, is blowing up the stage as she is giving the audience exactly what they want and more with her great high ranged soprano vocals.
Her vocal performances model such artists as Betty Wright, Whitney Houston ,and Chaka Chan. Deshon Shed, (aka Dr. D.), is the newest male vocalist in the group. He is setting the stage on fire with his musical talents which model legends, such as, Sam Cook, Al Green, and others. He joins the group for the 2008-2009 tour. Band members and vocalists include: Moses Brown - Leader/Bass, his son Michael Brown shared with Freddie Nailor on drums, Louis Morris and Monia Williams on keyboards, and binding it all together are G-Man and Calvin Jones as lead guitarists. Johnny Reynolds, with Southland Productions, is a consultant to Managers Patricia Dates and Moses Brown.
Casino entertainment is growing rapidly in Mississippi, and PROJEKT is a big part of that scene. Ameristar and Rainbow in Vicksburg, Bally’s in New Orleans and the Long Star in Greenville have also hosted fabulous tones and twangs of PROJEKT, often in repeat performances.
