Tangled beneath a wilderness of veins and arteries, fatigue and desire often find us bowing to the monuments of our defeat. Faith of any kind proves a task beyond volition, our prayers reduced to timid, votive candles. Transfixed by impulse and the need to remedy the immutable ache, we stumble down the paths of excess and need. Heaven, God, Whatever seem an impossible distance to traverse. Maybe there is even a kind of vanity in this: these attempts to breach the surface of ourselves and frame depravity and defeat in a story, a song, a painting, a poem. Yet, to not give voice to this is, perhaps, worse than defeat itself. Though my mouth may fill with ash, I can still hear the music. Amen.
