Tom Cadillac has a background in improvised jazz, experimental electronics and surrealism. So despite staying within the genre of electronic dance music this CD has a fairly distinctive flavour . So you won’t be hearing old over-familiar drum machine and software based beats. Just hardwired electronic instruments played by human hand. Hot circuits and blistering tendons!
There’s only one instrumental track – the minimal dub of ‘earblock’. The rest have a wide range of vocal samples, which are central to the music. It’s a good CD to listen to entire as the tracks move from the passion of ‘touch’ and south-central realism of ‘box’, through to the blissed-out ‘sky’. With a healthy dose of mad anguish thrown in along the way. Tom Cadillac has the ambition to be as real as possible to the human condition, while using the physical fuel of dance music to inspire change. And pretty much succeeds in this. There’s an urgency to the music which at times is riveting. Even a more relaxed track such as ‘baby’ features a doubled up and chopped organ sound – first heard in a more primitive form in the music of Can. But there’s not many reference points for this music yet.
Part of the ambition of this CD comes from a frustration with machines and the increasingly dehumanized world we survive in. How to give voice and inspiration from within a form of music –edm – which has so easily turned traitor to become ‘synth-pop’?
Deep from his electronic laboratory Tom’s warped voodoo lubricates the spinal cortex just as much as it urges the body to sweat. Organic sounds to drown out the synthetic.
And to end on a useful question. What’s this music for? - Its Bootpump! – stuff to put through your ears when you need to exhilarate.
