Details:
This album absolutely rocks. It dances in the footsteps of Elvis Costello, Chrissie Hynde, and The Clash- fans of Thea Gilmore take note. Holly and the Nice Lions is the band fronted by Holly Trasti- a woman of immense talent. She writes songs, sings, plays lead guitar, and is the energy behind a great rock band. I''m reminded of the day my friend Dave Phillips beat me to the local record store and scored the only copy of Elvis Costello''s debut album. I had to settle for a cassette copy- that i played over and over for five hours while I drove to the Twin Cities for a record buying weekend. Elvis hit all the right chords: his melodies, his lyrics, his attitude, his guitar playing- Holly and her Nice Lions have everything I loved for those five hours- except, perhaps- those dark rimmed glasses and a famous nom de plume. Holly Trasti is simply- a great rock player. Listen to this album over and over and fall in love with the initial guitar burst of "Chapter One." Then hum "Down to the River" to lighten up the routine of the "working week." Holly''s song, "Tango," ups the anti with a slow rock and soul examination of existence. Perhaps the quintessential moment of the record comes in the handclapping-vocal duet of "Something More"- a true rock and roll lyric that begs for the sexuality of the dance floor. The Ramones come to mind. There are so many others- "Wild Things," the reverb of "Tango," and the absolute beauty of "Puzzles." Sure, this is a home recording- like Buddy holly''s first single and Horslip''s "The Tain." But that''s the stuff of rock music. If you want the latest Fleetwood Mac- which probably took them a year to record- go to Wal-mart and get a special corporate deal with some sort of bonus disc. Holly and her Nice Lions aren''t for sale at Wal-mart. Their music is much better than that. This is a great album. Don''t be left behind and wait to buy a Stooges- or a Holly and the Nice Lions record- in a Goodwill store twenty years too late. -Bill Golembeski author of The English Setter Dance and The Gospel of Dara
