Details:
Hammerheaded Quartet was formed in 2006 by former members of the longstanding, critically acclaimed jazz group Jazzlamic Jihad and current members of the avant-garde combo Mothguts. The band’s purpose is to creatively explore modern jazz repertoire and to create original compositions connected to the post-World War II American jazz tradition.
The group, which included all four current members in addition to the trumpeter Ted Chubb, spent 2006-2007 exploring and performing the early music of Newark native Wayne Shorter. Chubb subsequently left the group to join the onstage band of the Broadway show “Jersey Boys.” Since that time, Hammerheaded has recorded “Crazy Talk from the Brain Head,” which is soon to be released on Ratamacue Records.
Over the last two years, the group has been performing its own interpretations of the music of Thelonious Monk and is in the midst of recording a double-CD of Monk’s music, along with original Monk-inspired compositions and poetry. The quartet performed a concert of Monk’s music in conjunction with dancers from the Movement Dance Co. of Eatontown at the 2010 Conference on Race in the Twenty-first Century at Monmouth University.
