A double CD of covers of ballads by the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Tim Hardin, The Smiths, The Stranglers and many more! A most intriguing project with songs from different ages complementing each other, as Asher pays tribute to his own personal favourites and influences. It''s something of an Asher juke-box, as he sings his way charmingly through familiar and not so familiar songs.
The thing that holds it all together is that it comes across as if it were recorded ''live'' in a cathedral! The sound is swirling and ethereal, essentially acoustic but with minimalist orchestration… piano, cello and warm pads, or 12-string guitar, strings and subtle effects… and Asher''s very warm, soft, direct and plaintive vocals overlaying it all.
Of particular note are his goosebump-inducing rendition of Springsteen''s ''I''m on fire'', his bittersweet tribute to Morrisey in ''Please let me get what I want'' (which this writer believes actually outdoes Morrisey), his Baroque ''golden brown'' by the Stranglers and a very delicate ''Alexandra leaving'' by Leonard Cohen. Look out too for stunning versions of ''Mr. Bojangles'', ''Unchained melody'', ''Always on my mind'' and Dylan''s ''One more cup of coffee.''
Asher Quinn somehow has a way of drawing the listener into a secret other-worldly place of great beauty and poignancy, and one does not really wish to leave.
