Details:
Steve Krause meditates upon the dualities of life, love and loss on the singer-songwriter’s second album, Broke Down Beautiful, an acoustic adult rock collection produced by Grammy-winner Ben Wisch (Marc Cohn, David Wilcox, Patty Larkin). At the core of Steve’s songs are his lyrics – provocative, clever turns of phrase that alternately expose the soul or set it soaring. Wedded to his words are inviting, accessible melodies and a warm, expressive voice.

Steve possesses the unique ability to engage the listener so deeply that they feel as if they are having an intimate conversation with a friend. He wears both his intensity and his vulnerability on his sleeve, and confronts a wide spectrum of human emotion – conflict, joy, uncertainty and hope – with stark candor and refreshing honesty. His soothing, resonant and occasionally haunting melodies are thoughtfully coaxed from an acoustic guitar, and range from softly finger-picked ballads to rhythmically strummed up-tempo cuts. Wisch adorned the tracks with gentle instrumental accents and subtle flourishes using countrified steel and cool-toned electric guitars, keyboards and organs, aching cellos and violins, and drums and percussion that further Krause’s revealing messages, while never overwhelming or disturbing the prevailing mood. And like a caring companion not wanting to abuse the kindness of a friendly ear, Krause does not get bogged down by darkness or overwrought by emotion. Instead, he offers glimmers of comfort and hope, beacons of light leading towards brighter days.

“Life’s experiences are rarely experienced simply: as black or white, happy or sad. Most of the time, we wrestle with shades of gray. My music reflects that struggle. I try to capture life’s nuance and complexity in my music; to find hope and meaning in conflict, uncertainty, and loss, and to find wisdom in the fleeting nature of our joy. As the years roll by, I find that I appreciate those experiences - those hard-learned lessons - more and more, and I find great joy in sharing them through my songs,” said Steve, who grew up in both Northern and Southern California, and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he has built a loyal fan base through impassioned club performances.

In 2004, Steve debuted with the release of Very Fine Line, which introduced his open-hearted folk-rock song sensibilities at home and abroad. One of the collection’s cuts, “Snoopy,” a stroll through the seasons of life inspired by his favorite Peanuts character, garnered an award at the Great American Song Contest. Two songs from Broke Down Beautiful – the pensive “If I Were A Book” and the lonely “Halls Of Your Heart” – have already been honored by We Are Listening’s Lyric Writer Awards, a respected international competition that Steve’s songs won in 2007 and placed runner-up the subsequent year.
