Have cello will travel. To Swedish artist Alexander Iberer, the cello is not some archaic instrument, used only to add lush strokes to a cinematic score or as an integral piece in a classical composition. A true student of progressive jazz, Iberer sees the cello as a way of peering into the future. For example, on “Oggy,” Iberer sneaks the cello into a pulsating electronic mix; the past and the present collide in a dazzling fashion. In “Oggy,” Iberer recalls the work of pioneering artist – and unlikely MTV one-hit wonder – Herbie Hancock in its colorful marriage of jazz and dance music.

One of the qualities that distinguish Iberer’s work from his contemporaries is his feel for the beat. The title track may open with the kind of rich, sweeping music expected from a cellist, but the predictability stops there as it takes a turn for the funky. Although highly regarded in the jazz world for his contributions to some of Miles Davis’ groundbreaking records, Hancock was also chastised for his embrace of the synthesizer. Iberer shares Hancock’s visionary approach while setting a style of his own. “Sexy Red Dress” is soulful yet icy at the same time; its percolating computerized rhythms reminiscent of ‘80s R&B albeit with a harder punch.

Ironically, the best track on the album may be its most traditional. “Solar Eclipse” unreels majestically, a wall of sublime orchestration. However, mournful cello and mood-spinning piano bring it down to Earth, painting a portrait of darkened beauty. For all of its otherworldly suggestions, it is “Solar Eclipse” wherein Iberer really captures the heart as well as the mind.
