Sitting in his Condo next to his Keyboard and Dell laptop that he uses to produce his tracks, Dana reflects on his relationship with music. “I believe that music itself is clear evidence that there is a God who is eternally interested in our enjoying life. Music is a universal language based on a scale that can be manipulated into infinite amounts of Musical arrangements” He says.
Dana grew up in household surrounded by a diverse range of musical influences from Nat king Cole to the Mighty Spinners. Donny Hathaway made a real impression on Dana’s musical growth. “When I first heard “A song For You” I was blown away by the ability of one man to express himself from deep within through lyrics and melody. That was the turning point for me to really become a student of singing”.
The desire to learn how to sing and create his own compositions lyrically came into fruition at the age of 15 when his parents purchased an old out of tune Baby Grand piano. “I always wanted to learn how to play the piano and sing, so I just started playing with it, and in time I learned how to arrange chords on the piano for my own melodies, than create lyrics on top of those melodies. Songwriting is a craft that I am constantly working on getting better at. ” Dana began learning about his singing voice while listening to one of his mothers Nat King Cole records. “He had such a lower baritone smooth vocal style. Since my voice began to deepen at an early age I found it easier to try and imitate him, and I would do this for hours a day. My parents were very patient with me although it was very nerve wrecking for them at times. I can remember my brother and I became Brian McKnight and Boys II Men fans, and we use to sing in our parents garage performing our own imaginary concerts with songs from their albums. Those were fun times”. Dana reflects on the time when him and his best friend Rahim Whitehead formed a two man group named after their First name initials R n D. They sung whenever and wherever they could. “We use to put together our own performances and would really move the crowds. We worked well together because we both were good with people, we would just have a good time with the crowd”. Dana has been singing ever since and working on his craft. One year he had the unique privilege to sing with an R&B legend Gladys Knight at an opening for one of her Chain Restaurants. He says: “Musically it was the most memorable thing I have ever experienced. She actually invited me onstage to sing The Ray Charles Hit Georgia on My Mind with her as a duet she was so professional”. He says “I can remember the first person I called after the Performance was my mother crying I just sung with Gladys, I just sung with Gladys, I couldn’t believe it.”
Dana says: “All I can say Is” is an album that is a reflection of how I have always Felt about this ability to create and experience music. After I finish writing a song and I see how it all comes together as if I am discovering rather than creating it, this always reminds me of My Creator. This Album describes the link between love the emotion, and the God who is Love. Dana says: “I have always loved music and will always enjoy the creative process. ALL I CAN SAY IS I hope you enjoy this musical art exhibit of mine. There will be more to come…….”
