Details:
This album is a complete poem in the style of modern spoken word and performance poetry. Each track is a stanza contributing to the theme of the CD which is our culture''s bitter sweet struggle to accept, ignore, criticize or minimize the African-American experience.
"Blues Themes" is a riff on mankind''s ancient dependence on the blues in all aspects of our lives.
"The Deal" introduces "Mr. Cosby" which is a critique of the iconic comedian''s anti-urban black comments made in his 2004 speech to the NAACP.
"A Taste of Honey" starts recalling the historical perspective on the plight of urban blacks, and "Flag" condemns the continued presence of the racist Confederate flag which still flies proudly over many Southern States in the 21st century. "Missy Jakes" recounts the particular cruelty that was a hallmark of American slavery, while "Miss Duck" is a poem about my personal experience in inner city schools.
"White Liberals" is a critique of the so-called American white liberal, which may be an oxymoron these days despite the dire warnings of modern white Conservative Republicans.
"Forget About It" is a poem about the predominate modern directive to the descendants of all oppressed, victimized people: just forget about it.
"The Ballad of 40 Cats" is about a black super hero in search of his estranged family during antebellum days who reminds us not to forget that American slavery destroyed the black family.
"Cook My Greens" is a celebration of the simple pleasure of loving someone, cooking, and eating with ones family - pleasures denied to enslaved blacks.
"Say No To Me" is about a man and a woman who say no to infidelity for the sake of their families " and a black nation that has endured all and will endure to the end".
"Father" is a poem commissioned by Anita Long and dedicated to her father: jazz guitarist, pioneer Huey Long
who died here in Houston in 2009 at the age of 105. I read the poem at his funeral and thought it was fitting to include it in this compilation with its historical context.
The CD ends with a haiku on the tragic end of the life of a honey bee, a symbol of this CD''s theme on the bitter sweet experience of all oppressed people - but particularly Africans in America.
Listen to "A Taste of Honey"straight through to get a sense of it''s poetic flow. Let me know what you think. Whether you agree with the ideas expressed on the CD or not, I hope you are persuaded to enjoy one of my proudest poetic creative achievements.
