Details:
Solon, a shepherd in the ancient world, falls asleep in a cave during a storm, and awakens on the dream plain... There, Astroth, a spirit guide, takes him through a doorway leading to the center of the universe, and shows him the Golden Mass, the manifestation of universal love for all beings. When Solon wakes again, he is back in the cave, but in the far future, at the end of recorded time. Story and music by Cynthia Sternau; voices synthesized by VocalWriter.
Dramatis Personae:
Solon, a Shepherd
Astroth, a Spirit Guide
Chorus of Villagers
Solon the Dreamer finds a frame in the story of Epimenides, one of the mysterious seven sages of ancient Greece, a shepherd and lyric poet who fell asleep in a cave and awoke forty-seven (or, perhaps, fifty-eight) years later, to an almost unrecognizable world. The name Solon evokes the great Athenian lawmaker and poet (another of the mythical seven sages), yet this Solon is not Solon of Athens, or any other historical or mythological personage. Much of this opera’s action takes place on the dream plain—so transcending the structure of the physical world to present a vision that is both spiritual, and alien.
