The Thoughts are a Seattle-based trio comprised of drums, violin/harp, and guitar/vocals. They tell their stories with a mix of savagery and sweetness, at times whispering honeyed words in the ear and at others wailing in reckless abandon. Undertows of graceful string harmonies are pitted against complex, impressionistic percussion in arrangements that are pretty, violent, intimate, and unexpected.

The Thoughts came about in 2007. Ian Williams and Jon Horwath, who have played together for a long, long time, joined with Seattle violinist Katie Mosehauer. The band self-released their first album, Consider the Bear, in 2009 and their second, I Won’t Keep You Here, in early 2011.

The Thoughts are:

Ian Williams: vocals, guitar

Ian Williams is a mostly harmless animal who wanders the cities of the Pacific Northwest, though some sightings happen as far east as NYC. He went to school, studied music and theatre, and writes songs. He loves crows, but crows don’t love him. He would like to meet a polar bear, but it suspects that the polar bear might be indifferent, or possibly hostile. He likes that whales sing songs.

Katie Mosehauer: violin, harp

Katie Mosehauer likes books and sad songs and tends to touch the plants she walks by. She thinks the latter might end badly at some point, but she’s willing to take her chances. She studied music and anthropology and linguistics and after many years, has decided that the first was the wisest choice--with a violin as her voice she can say things she’s never had the words for.

Jon Horwath: drums

Jon Horwath has played drums since he can remember. During college he spent the majority of his time in the music building and so ended up with a minor in music and a teaching certification for instrumental music. His great love is anything experimental or improvised and specifically, John Coltrane. Other drumming influences include Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jon Fishman, Greg Saunier, and Ringo Starr.

“The Thoughts have offered up material for the thinking fan, and they aren''t afraid to take chances with their wintry trips through sound and style.”

“Singer Ian Williams is the proprietor of a haunting Yorkeian falsetto. Like the Radiohead frontman, his voice climbs up and down scales searchingly, looking for quarter from turbulent sea of emotion. It’s the same poetic, whimsical and salty storytelling found in Decemberists and Neutral Milk Hotel. The electric guitar distortion, a creeping violin, plucked strings and drums are strange shipmates, but quirkiness of it all buoys the music and makes it irresistibly charming.”
