About 2am at the corner dance-atorium. Tobacco smoke fills the air. Waitresses are cleaning tables and trading wisecracks with a couple of guys at the bar. A dim red light profiles a few somewhat weary band members on the narrow wooden stage. They just finished playing a slow ballad called St. James Infirmary. On the dance floor, several couples remain glued together, whispering to each other softly. Then the trumpet player signals that it''s time to try a new tune. He plays the intro, and the dance floor is alive again.
