"Inventiveness never caught short. Completely admirable..."
Marc Chaloin - Improvjazz, France

Expressive and virtuosic, the music of New York composers Jeff Arnal (percussion) and Gordon Beeferman (piano) springs from avant-garde traditions, both classical and jazz. Their work is a synthesis of the highly defined compositional elements of contemporary classical music and the spontaneity and energy of free-improvisation.

Composer and pianist GORDON BEEFERMAN, a native of Cambridge, MA, was born in 1976. He played the piano from an early age; as a teenager he studied jazz and Third Stream with Ran Blake and Hankus Netsky. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music, where he received his B.M. in composition.

His compositions include works for piano, voice, orchestra, guitar, and various chamber groups. His music has been heard in concert halls in New York, Boston, Chicago, Milan, Rome, Maine, Michigan, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. He has received awards for his compositions from BMI and ASCAP and fellowships from the Aaron Copland House (2000) and Tanglewood (2001).

Beeferman is becoming recognized as a unique and talented composer. Upon the premiere of the final movement of his Symphony #1, the Chicago Tribune praised Beeferman for his "masterly orchestral craftsmanship... odd, refreshing sonorities and expressive speech."

An accomplished and versatile pianist, Beeferman moves easily across the boundaries between composition, interpretation and improvisation. He has performed in a wide range settings, from concert soloist to free-improviser. Beeferman lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Improvisor and composer JEFF ARNAL received his MFA in Music from Bennington College and his BA in Music Composition and Filmmaking from the University of Maryland. A native of Georgia, he began playing the drums at the age of 13. In 1990 he moved to Baltimore, MD to study at the Peabody Conservatory. Two years later he began composition studies with Stuart Saunders Smith. This experience profoundly effected Arnal''s approach to creating music. Smith''s role as a mentor helped launch Arnal''s foray into exploring improvisation as composition. In 1997 Arnal began studying with percussionist Milford Graves at Bennington College. In addition, he studied electronic music with Joel Chadabe and composition with Amy Williams. While at Bennington, Arnal had the good fortune to work with Mark Dresser, Charles Gayle, William Parker, and Roswell Rudd.

Arnal has performed with a wide range of artists, including Gordon Beeferman, Dan Dechellis, Vattel Cherry, John Dierker, Charles Gayle, Katt Hernandez, John Hughes, Ernesto Diaz-Infante, Sabir Mateen, Donald Miller, Stan Nishurama, Blaise Siwula, Lars Scherzberg, and Jonathan Vincent. He has toured throughout the US and Europe with performances at Big Sur Experimental Music Festival, Big Sur, CA, Autumn Uprising Festival, Boston, MA, Altelier Neben Monsun Theater, Hamburg, Germany, Oaksmus, Berlin, Germany, Judson Memorial Church, the Knitting Factory, ABC No Rio, and PS 122, New York, NY. Arnal can be heard on Cadence Jazz Records, Oaksmus Records, Sachimay Records, and Generate Records. Currently Arnal resides in Brooklyn, NY where he is an active member of the music community.
