Wanted liner notes

This, Vint & Mathilda’s second album, is a collaboration with well-known Michigan singer-songwriter Billy King. Perhaps missing his roots in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Vint wanted to achieve a distinctively western feel with this production. He wrote a series of songs ranging from the hauntingly philosophical “Cowboy Song” and “El Dorado,” to the hysterical lyrics of “Daddy is a Drag Queen.” One thing is for certain; this is not your father’s Country/Western album.

Described as a cross between Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Dale Gilmore, this album is both quirky and deep, exploring the motivations of conquistadores and cattlemen, mortality in “Train of Black”, not to mention dress wearing fathers and an Australian cowboy in “The Cowboy from Down Under” (under what we’ll never know).

According to Vint, “the first time my father heard Daddy is a Drag Queen was when he was sitting in the audience of a large concert we were giving in a Detroit suburb. We introduced my father (who stood up) and I said, very sincerely, this was a song I wrote for him and I hope that it’s not too sentimental. Needless to say, my father does not dress in drag. Luckily for me, he has a great sense of humor and enough of an ego to believe that any song written about him his better than no songs written about him. Being from Santa Fe and having plenty of cross-dressing friends doesn’t hurt either.” It was this song that garnered Vint & Mathilda their first taste of commercial success making the college radio circuit. “I was sort of afraid that I’d be pigeonholed as a novelty song writer, but luckily that hasn’t happened. Although, I knew that we has gained a bit of notoriety when I would start to give my serious introduction to the song and audience members would begin giggling before the first punch line.”

Award winning songwriter and engineer, Billy King, joins the duo on this album adding a thick, rich sound to Vint’s original songs through his superb musicianship (singing harmonies and playing bass, piano, rhythm & lead guitar, banjo and drums). Billy has been making a significant name for himself in the Midwest on the festival circuit and is the cofounder of Holler Fest.

The entire album was recorded at Billy’s Frog Holler Studios located on an organic farm in Irish Hills Michigan. During the 6-week production, Vint & Mathilda helped pick vegetables and make the salad mix that has made Frog Holler Farm well known throughout the region. They also picked and ate all of the veggies they needed for their own meals. “It was really a wonderful experience. The album had a complete life of its own and the memories associated with making it will last a lifetime, or until Alzheimer’s sets in,” according to Vint.

As always, Mathilda’s classical violin weaves its way throughout the album and gives the music that unique flavor that is distinctively Vint & Mathilda. Combining her twenty-three years of violin playing with the multitalented musicianship of Billy, and the original lyrics by Vint, results in something quite magical. It is something that one needs to sit down with some friends, preferably with good senses of humor, and listen to while drinking a beer (Australian), or red wine (according to Vint).
