Details:
"Manstein" is a collaborative project featuring acclaimed singer/songwriters Donald Rubinstein and Jono Manson. Their debut album "Life is Orange" was born out of a series of improvisational writing and recording sessions at Manson''s Kitchen Sink Studio. The result is a unique blend of their respective musical sensibilities that is unlike anything in their vast individual catalogs. The music is sparse and melodic - at once warm and engaging, quixotic and haunting.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Jono Manson is a prolific singer/songwriter and seasoned performer, with a long track record that includes major-label releases as both recording artist and producer and extensive touring in the USA and Europe. Jono recently completed work (produced/recorded/mixed) on a new solo project for Blues Traveler front man John Popper. He also co-wrote much of the material for this album.

Jono comes from a family full of creative people. His mother was a principle member in the Martha Graham dance company, who also worked alongside the likes of Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Leonard Bernstein and Jono''s cousins are the filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen. So, it''s not surprising that he formed his first all-original band in 1968 at the age of seven and, from that moment on, never looked back. Jono also has a growing number of film and television music credits to his name. Most notably, he wrote and produced music for Kevin Costner''s "The Postman, in which he also had an on-screen role, and his recording of "Miss Fabulous" is featured in the Farrelly Brothers'' hit movie "Kingpin". Jono Manson has performed and/or worked in the studio with innumerable artists including Blues Traveler, Bo Diddley, Joan Osborne, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Carol King, Amy Grant, Ramblin'' Jack Elliot, Pete Seeger,, Steve Earle, Kris Kristofferson, Ani DiFranco, Terry Allen, Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, and Bruce Springsteen.

“The gravelly-voiced Manson attacks the high art of low-rent songcraft with a paid assassin’s precision."
No Depression Magazine

“Jono Manson serves up a rippling blend of blue-eyed soul, country-rock and funked up R&B.
No Depression Magazine

“One heck of a healthy concoction of country, blues and roots music. Listening to the music makes it easy to see how so many rockers fell under the spell of Manson’s genius.”
 The Advocate

Donald Rubinstein – composer, singer/songwriter and multimedia artist – made his musical debut at age 25, composing the score to George A. Romero''s cult classic film Martin, which was named one of the “Top 100 Coolest Soundtracks of All Time” by Mojo magazine in 2002. Since then he has released 21 CDs, ranging from Americana-influenced rock to jazz to contemporary experimental and modern classical; scored several feature films and main titles for two television series; performed and recorded with numerous world-renowned jazz, rock, and country artists; and has compositions commissioned by musicians from the Boston Symphony and New York Philharmonic Orchestras. “Fingers,” his duet with Bill Frisell, was included on Jazziz magazine’s limited edition 20th anniversary CD, Celebration of the Modern Era, alongside Miles Davis, Charlie Paker and Cassandra Wilson.

Rubinstein’s multimedia and visual work have been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art (in collaboration with artist Kiki Smith); The Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe and The Bemis Center for the Arts, among others. A film entitled “Pilgrim” by Emmy Award-winning director Miguel Grunstein, based on Rubinstein''s life and work, is currently shooting and is slated for completion by December, 2010.

“Beautiful tunes, standout songs…devoid of transitory trendiness.”
Los Angeles Times

"His prolific discography is something you should take the time to explore, to discover the genius landscape that Donald Rubinstein has sculpted over the past few decades..."When She Kisses the Ship On His Arm" is a collection of 13 very important songs. This is the first time I ever used the word "important" to describe an album. You need to hear these songs."
Adobe Airstream, The Online Magazine For Citizens of Culture.

"For sheer variety and entertainment, Donald Rubinstein''s novel, unpredictable show is hard to match…Stunning, house-shaking …hauntingly beautiful.”
LA Weekly
