The Skeleton Key Band was founded in Big Bear Lake, California in the early 21st Century. Founding members Rich Spaulding and Tom Burton form the core of the band – performing most basically as an acoustic duo, and most expansively as a 5 (or 6) piece folk rock band. Their music is derived from traditional American Honky Tonk music of the 20th century. Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead are major inspirations as well as Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam, and of course two favorite country bands – the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Eric Nutter plays the bass, and Jim Runkle plays the drums (and sings too). They form the most solid rockin’ rhythm section Skeleton Key has ever known (even though our old guys were good too). The amazingly wide-ranging guitarist, vocalist, and harmonica-ist Brad Riesau (pronounced like “see saw”) adds extra dimensions to the sound whenever he is in town (he’s bi-coastal, but we’re open-minded). Our local world class astro-physicist from the Big Bear Solar Observatory, Roy Coulter, adds mandolin, acoustic guitar and vocals whenever he is available and we’re feeling especially folky. Recording ace Rusty Smith joins the band on bass, guitar, and vocals on frequent occasions. Most of us write songs too, so we mix our own originals in with lots of old favorites.
