Roly is proud to announce the release of their self-titled CD. Roly is an instrumental band from Saint Louis, Missouri that blends reggae, soul, and jazz, heard through the filter of Dub production techniques. Roly has performed around the Saint Louis area for several years, including an unforgettable late night appearance at the Summer Splash Reggae Festival in 2010. With its debut release, Roly captures the same hypnotic magic in the studio that it has long been creating on stage.
In early 2010, Roly stole away to a remote ranch near Missouri’s Castor River to begin the recording process. They transformed a trailer on the property into a temporary recording hideaway and even named one spontaneous late-night session, “Dubble Wide” to pay homage to the unique studio. Ten more tracks were recorded and mixed in an expansive style that is hard to label, but can be best described as Dub.
Usually devoid of vocals, Dub tracks are manipulated by isolating and then processing each instrument’s audio signal through various electronic filters, echoes, and reverb effects. The results are hypnotic and emotionally evocative. The Dub sound has strongly influenced both punk rock and electronic dance music since its origins in Jamaica in the 1970’s, not to mention continuing to inform today’s dancehall and roots reggae. More recently, a scattered musical movement of sorts has gradually emerged around the world, as younger players of various genres pay tribute to Jamaican Dub through their production style and mood.
With its self-titled release, Roly forges new directions in Dub that evoke the best of subterranean dancehall and roots music.
Roly is Andrew Cheek on Drums, Drew Freiberger on Bass, Eric Post on Keyboards, Teddy Presberg on Guitar, and Nathan Frost on Percussion. Also featured is David “T-Bone” Scott on Horns, as well as an array of other guests.
"Some people call them pill bugs, others call them sow bugs; but in the Midwest, we take some delight in calling them roly poly’s. A few years ago, while jamming for fun in the basement, we stumbled upon a pokey groove that reminded us in some odd way of the roly poly. Before long, we were playing under that name on stages all around town. We soon shortened our name to just “Roly,” and decided to make a CD. Some months later, it has finally been mixed and is now in your hands. If you''ve shaken your butt to Roly before, we hope that this recording lives up to any fond memories.
