Details:
My new children’s book, Manny Dah Mongoose … Fastest Mongoose in Town is derived from a song I wrote a few years back. After performing the song/story many times, I kept having people tell me that the story would make a great children’s book. Having recently come across some cartoons I once sketched about Manny Dah Mongoose, I finally got off my “Okole” (My bottom!) and decided to give it a try!

Manny Dah Mongoose is a story written and performed in “Pidgin English.” Pidgin is the street language of the Hawaiian Islands and other islands in the Pacific area where a variety of native cultures have mixed together.
In linguistic terms, Pidgin is a simplified version of the English language often augmented by features from other languages prevalent in Hawaii.

Hawaiian Pidgin is a dialect that has evolved over the past 200 years from all the mixing ethnicities intermingling in the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiian Pidgin combines Hawaiian, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, English and Portuguese and is essentially “Street Hawaiian.” Pidgin is how the local people of Hawaii talk to each other and show that they are indeed “local!” Pidgin is a language that puts across a maximum amount of meaning with minimal words.

This book, by no means, is meant to promote the use of Pidgin English. It is just the way that I decided to tell Manny’s story. Most local people in Hawaii can speak both Pidgin English and perfect English as well.

The story of Manny Dah Mongoose is both a fun story and a sad story with a lesson to be learned by “Keikis”
(Children) of all ages.
