The Lotus goodnight is, but not limited to, Karina Kern and Justen Schaller. Knowing each other since the 6th grade, the reason for never playing together until after high school is unknown. Now both are on their way to a full fledged music career. The Duo never actually sat down and decided what kind of music they were going to play, they just wrote whatever felt right at the moment. Neither ever wanted to be in a group that you couldn''t tell one song from the next, or even be limited on what you can do in a song. Their backgrounds may vary, but now the goal is the same. To never stop creating the wonder that is music.
Now with there first cd, (call it a demo, a EP, or just a disk) they are hoping to broaden there fan spectrum. Putting playing live on hold for the last 3 months to finish recording and get together a full live band. So according to justen, “phase one is complete, now on to the hard stuff like gaining gaining fans while managing our work and school lives. Although either of us would drop everything for the music, I know people hear it all the time, especially the entertainment and record guys but this cd holds a large part of us both.”
“From Nowhere” was started with a Single instrumental track, that karina put words and a melody to(which eventually became coffee cup). It was continued with us working on songs together through email, justen wrote the instruments and karina sang. (in further recordings karina will be playing too, as well as some surprise vocals from justen). Basic versions for all 5 songs were written and recorded in justens home studio but the 2 decided it would be a good idea to go into a studio at IPR and re-record the tracks. (which justen had previously attended, but needed to leave in order to make a living, but is planing on returning part-time in the spring.) after re recording half of the songs, they decided they liked the magic of the “in the moment” recordings done earlier. The only recording from IPR that was kept, is the guitar and vocal track for sail away. After recording in IPR with a close friend, and the audio was finished, they contacted some other friends and asked for some favors. they had a photography major they knew do our photo shoot. Another friend do the cover design and layouts. After working and penny pinching for weeks they had gathered enough money to have the cd made through disk makers.
Now they are out most nights doing the footwork and playing to support the group, weather its with the full band or just the duo at a open mic night. There committed, and ready to fight for what they want, the privilege and honer to get paid to create, and play their music.
Since the music is what matters, they have been described as acoustically-chill, pop-country-electronic-acoustic rock, and “if jack johnson was a girl, had a bad day and started writing music Damon Albarm of the Gorillaz.
