Lara wrote Charlie, Mister (Be My Man), and Happened Before. She co-wrote Kill the Thrill and Empty Melody while in London.
Lara dreamed up the song ''Charlie'' when the warm June weather this year brought the memory of a massive unrequited summer camp crush from a few years back. Stylistically, that sense of summertime yearning for the perfect, unreachable boy brought to mind ‘60s girl groups and British Invasion era bands, and soon ''Charlie'' was born.
For ‘Mister (Be My Man)’, a 1930s, speakeasy style tune, Lara channeled a spirit of whimsy and adventure while writing-- important elements of life that can get lost in the day-to-day shuffle. She thought of hot air balloons, magicians, and exotic travels—the kinds of things we dream about when we go to the movies or wish for that one exciting love. With this song, Lara won third place in the annual BMI John Lennon Scholarship Contest.
''Happened Before'' came from the sensation of giving one''s all and not being listened to. The song deals with exclusion, sacrifice, and false hope (all trials that befall aspiring musicians); but ultimately, it is about reclaiming one''s power and standing strong.
