Details:
Fencing, fighting, brass, torture, revenge, rock opera, giants, monsters, pop songs, true love, miracles...if The Princess Bride was a band. Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers are a sextet of classically trained musicians that have crafted their own musical niche of operatic indie jazz. Complex song writing and “Winnipeg''s strongest horn section” (The Manitoban) give Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers a stylistic diversity that appeals to indie popsters, big-band lovers and folksters alike. Their diverse repertoire ranges from sing-along pop songs to adventurous theatrical compositions. Musical references have been made to Calexico, Hawksley Workman, Weather Report and Beirut in an attempt to define Flying Fox’s eclectic sound.

Flying Fox & the Hunter Gatherers’ self-titled EP was released in August 2008, earning a five star review from University of Winnipeg’s The Uniter and a description as one of Winnipeg’s “most acclaimed bands” by the The Winnipeg Sun. Flying Fox’s resume highlights include festival performances at the Komasket Music Festival (Vernon, BC), the Great Woods Music Festival (Beausejour, MB), the Brandon Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Jazz Festival and a showcase at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. In summer 2010 Flying Fox broke onto national airwaves with a debut performance on CBC’s Canada Live. Expect a full length album from Flying Fox in early 2011.

Since 2009 Flying Fox have been cultivating their alter-ego as producers of rock opera with annual sold-out performances of Songs from Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2010 this moonlit persona was taken to full fruition with the debut of an original rock opera titled The Wild Things. Inspired by Maurice Sendack''s iconic children''s story, Where the Wild Things Are, the rock opera features elaborate costume and set design by local artists. A sold out debut in February 2010 prefaced a full production at the 2010 Winnipeg Fringe Festival, where the show garnered the prestigious “Best of Fest” award. The accompanying soundtrack, aptly titled The Wild Things, was released at the Fringe in July 2010.

"This outfit effortlessly blends jazz, pop, rock and folk to create a bombastic sound that has no shortage of swagger." (Uptown)

"[Flying Fox] takes hundreds of years of musical history from diverse genres and presents it in a way that packs dance floors and makes any musician in the audience run back to their teacher in tears." (The Uniter)
