One word often tossed around when describing the music of The Flank is vintage. The brainchild of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dave D''Amelio, the songs often sound straight out of the late 60''/ early 70''s era. Comparisons are often made to that era''s Beatles or Bowie tunes in sound, if not in content. "We purposely limited ourselves in the number of recording tracks we were going to use,” says D''Amelio. "It really keeps you focused on the song since you can''t hide behind massive production and tons of doubled instruments." The result was The Flank''s first full-length studio CD At Stake.
An intricate part of The Flank’s recording process was gearing the entire project to have an album feel of connected songs. Maintaining this flow drove the sonic choices of instrumentation and arrangement. It also helped to decide some of the tempos. The songs shine a spotlight on a variety of characters that inhabit the fringes of society. The lyrics are very visual, characters you can picture in your mind. The tone of the song usually gives a clue to the character‘s nature or appearance. Producer Don Melber explains, “It really wasn’t a conscious choice during the recording process. It was something we noticed after the entire CD was completed."
A veteran of the local Lehigh Valley music scene, D''Amelio plays most of the instruments himself, bringing in friends to fill in any of the gaps. "A lot of the songs have been around for a while, in one form or another,” he said, when discussing the recording, "but everything tends to change a little when you get in the studio. The evolution of the songs as they are recorded is one of the most enjoyable parts of working on them." The Flank’s At Stake was a long-running studio project that took a while to mix and master after the initial recording and will be formally released in 2010. The people at VWW tend to think of these projects as hidden treasure, waiting to be found.
New songs are showing a slightly different style and sound from the first set. The sound is more raw and guitar driven. Half of the fun of writing is the freedom to change. No use repeating, when the possibilities are endless.
