-band started back in late 2008 in Naugatuck, CT.

As a band we decided we wanted to do something a little unique, ridicoulous, brutal, in your face and straight to the point. All of our songs have lots of riffs and parts but remain catchy. “I easily become disinterested in metal when I can predict what’s going to happen next” says vocalist Bill Klopfer. Penitentary still has the hooks and grooves that make a song just memorable as any hit song you’ll ever hear, but we make sure you’ll hit some bumps and bruises throughout the process. Penitentary is meant to be music “we” ourselves would listen to day in day out. If we came around for a show you bet yourself we would be the first ones in the pit tearing it up.
Our Debut album “Rip the System” was released independently through Skumbagh Productions June,1,2010. It is truly an introduction of mass hysteria that Penitentary will unleash to the public for years to come. The music speaks for itself with thrash metal riffs, speed picking antics, mind blowing transitions, Monster Machinegun like drums, and demonic distorted bass. The voice of reason is sometimes referred to as a controlled substance that comes with side effects such as High blood pressure, shortness of breath, Heart palpitations, Deafening ears, increased excitement, Violent behavior, Manic episodes, increased libido and whiplash. The sounds of melodic screaming mixed with thunderous growls and epic narrating vocals begin the construction a metal dominion undiscovered.
Lyrically this band is based on ones Mental illness, perception, action and struggle throughout an average existence. There are a few important songs worth discussing. The album opens up with a song called “Victory” that sums up a traumatic experience one had early in his life. This person was backstabbed by a best friend and scared throughout his youth. Later in life the victim made it his duty to make sure this person would pay a price for his crime. The song is a prelude to the downward spiral of human development. There’s always a beginning to ones demise and path to self destruction. “Rip the System” is about taking a risk. If you play, you could win take a chance. Once you cross the path of self destruction there aint no coming back, so live your life to the fullest. “Flashback Hallucinosis” is about the fear that exists today, but was planted from the past. Another song that tickles our fancy is the track “Corporate Massacre”. This song is dedicated to the average “unhappy corporate conformed slave”. We all have people that we have to answer to. Sometimes people do not realize exactly how they sound on the outside. If people could get away with murder would they? It’s all about Day dreaming the impossible fantasy.
Penitentary has many influences that helped initiate its core. Legendary bands such as Pantera, The Haunted, Fear Factory, Testament, Strapping Young Lad Death, Slayer, Soulfly and Sepultura are considered D.N.A of ours and would be found in a simple blood test. More recent bands such as Dark Tranquility, Crowbar, Primus, Typo-Negative, Daath, Amon Amarth, One Man Army and the Undead Quartet, The Crown, Tenet, Lamb of God, Kataklysm, Grip inc, In flames, Beyond the Embrace, The Duskfall, Byzantine, Bloodbath etc.
