“Parcels & Polaroids” is a concept album that pushes the boundaries of pop music expression. Abandoning the oversaturated themes of love, money and other clichés, the album explores the unique frustrations of wanting to affect positive change in the world. The emotional and intellectual journey begins with the melancholy Dostoevsky inspired piece “Five Inch Step”, and ends with the resounding hope of the final chorus in “4:37am”. From sadness, constraint, societal pressures, nostalgia, kindness, acceptance to hope, the range of moods explored in this album are wide and diverse – yet the songs manage to somehow stay not only coherent, but also convey a sense of belonging with all the other songs. The greatest common factor though, is that all the songs are at its heart, listenable, palatable pop.
To express these complex themes, The Pawnshop Manual draws from musical influences ranging from world music, rock, pop, folk, electronica and classical music. One could say Radiohead meets Björk meets Arcade Fire.
