IT''S TIME TO TAKE AFRICAN MUSIC

OUT OF THE WORLD MUSIC BOX

- And put it in there with the other hot sounds of the day, on the A-lists of the radios, and into the CD players in homes, in cars and on the streets.

This is the intention of the Tanzanian MRADI GROUP, who have prepared a tasty collection of rhythmic, melodious African pop music recorded in STUDIO MARIMBA in Dar Es Salaam.

Focus on East Africa:
The Mradi group consists of musicians with experience from several of the finest bands that are presently playing in the clubs, on the stages and in the hotels and restaurants in Dar Es Salaam. They came together to meet a challenge: To compose, arrange, play and record the music that would give East African music the focus it deservs in the world of music. While other parts of Africa have been producing records and artists who have gained international acclaim, East African music have so far not had the same level of international success.

A new pop style out of Africa:
Mradi Group have found a way to translate the riches of Tanzanian music traditions into a modern and exciting musical form that is unique to their area and their culture. Their CD "Indege" contains music that reflects everything from the arab-tinged taarab traditions of Zanzibar, via Tanzanian ngoma traditions to the flowing kalimba styles of central Tanzania. Traditional melodies and rhythms, original compositions, and sparkeling, inspired playing on traditional an electric instruments all find their place in a modern sounding production.

The album is produced by Sigbjørn Nedland, who is the man behind such former releases as "Tranzania", "Meeting in Moscow" and "Make Me a Channel of your Peace", which have all been in the top ten of the World Music Charts Europe.

Tracks on the "Indege" CD:

1. Indege
Traditional melody from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, with
composer, singer and keyboard player Bizimana fronting the band.

2. Watoto wi mitaani
A song about fate and the human value of the street children written by Rudala, and featuring Anania on kalimba and co-vocals with Rudala.

3. Tesa moyo wangu
A bittersweet lament about love by Maryam, young composer, lyric writer and singer with a voice dripping of arab- and taarab-influences, and subtle reggae elements in the backing.

4. Babu
Guitarist Nurdin brought the song about Babu: "Grandpa", and the group collectively formed a driving, surging pop song out of it.

5. Nitakukumboka
Rudala, Bona and Anania in sweet, three part harmonies, accompanied by intertwining guitar and kalimba.

6. Kambelele
Bizimana, the piano man of Dar Es Salaam, demonstrating his skills as creator of Pure Pop Music for Now People - fresh out of Africa.

7. Usifikiri
Maryam again. Don''t be folled by the apparent melancholy. The song is strongly advocating her right as a woman to be a musician, and opposing the old fashioned conventions discouraging women from a career in music.

8. Fuhuru
A bluesy little folk tune from North-Western Tanzania, showing that the distance from East-Africa to Missisippi amounts to nothing if measured on the frets of a guitar.

9. Sangalele
Anania in top form, playing his kalimba and demonstrating his exquisite singing style, reflecting his background in the music of the Watoto-tribe of Central Tanzania.

10. Yaret
A romantic conclusion to the album, with the voices of Jamila and Maryam puring honey over arab-tinged bed of electric instruments and African percussion.
