Following a decade of song-writing, performing, touring & recording together, acoustic duo MUNDY-TURNER are celebrating the release of their latest album, HA’PENNY TWEEDLE - and it looks set to be their best yet.
Thirteen tracks deliver an hour of masterful vocal & instrumental performances from Cath Mundy & Jay Turner. The pair’s trademark soaring vocal harmonies are a powerful force, while Cath’s fine fiddle & Jay’s individual open-tuned guitar have never before been so beautifully recorded.
The ebullient title track breathes life into the family story of Jay’s Great-Grandfather, a late-19th century English colliery worker who turned travelling showman with his homebuilt fairground ride, the Ha’Penny Tweedle.
The pair also cleverly re-interpret a range of bush ballads from Cath’s native Australia, bringing new depth to classic works by Banjo Paterson & Henry Lawson.
A stark acappella arrangement of the traditional anti-war song c.1815, "Mrs McGrath", aptly contrats & links with Jay''s superb new song "Stealing My Democracy", whilst the deply moving "We Can Fly to Heaven" showcases Cath''s emotive voice at it most silken & pure.
There’s a definite old-timey lilt to the album. Yet the collection still manages to pack a contemporary punch with songs like Unfinished Business and bonus track Naked (which treats one of the duo’s most popular live tracks to a sensitive band arrangement).
Presenting a delectable combination of original & traditional songs, glorious instrumentals, stunning acappella & Australian bush ballads, HA’PENNY TWEEDLE finds MUNDY-TURNER at the height of their song-writing & performing powers.
