ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Power Pop

Details:
Transportation Disguises is the second full length release from The Mittens. Calling Cedar Falls, Ia. home, The Mittens formed in 2000, releasing their debut, In Spite of U, in the winter of 2002. The original band featured Kevin Jass on guitar and vocals, Stacy Peck on bass, and Pat Curtis on drums. All songs are written by Jass.
Released in 2004, Transportation Disguises builds on the indie rock foundation laid on the previous effort. Recorded at Minstrel Studio in Iowa City, produced by John Svec, and mastered by John Golden, the second album is more focused and confident, while hanging on to the melodic charm of the first. Also, a new rhythm section displays some classic rock muscle. Niles Naatkgeboren on bass, and brother William Naatkgeboren on drums fill out the current line-up.
Transportation Disguises is a frustrated batch of songs dealing with isolation, rejection and hope. The act of moving vs. remaining catatonic seems to be a recurring theme on this record.
The album has been described as a collection of pent-up songs usually finding their release, bobbing up and down in volume and intensity through raspy verses and jagged choruses. The ratty pop sound takes cues from the eighties Minneapolis scene. Bands like Husker Du, Replacements, and Magnolias can be referenced for inspiration. The muscular rhythm section recalls The Who, or possibly Nirvana. Other comparisons: Dinosaur Jr., Poster Children, Smashing Pumpkins, Wedding Present, Spoon, Kinks, and The Jam.
