How would one describe a band like New Mexican Erection? It''s not like the name spells it out. How about "an all-original four-piece thrash meets groove experience?" Or maybe, "a dynamic, explosive, mix of guitars, bass, drums, and vocals?" Or possibly, "funk meets heavy metal mix with a self-described style?" However, anyway you look at this band, be prepared because this group is definitely not for the weak hearted.

The original band "NME" (phonetically spelling of "Enemy") was formed in 1992, when vocalist Travis Manning ran into friend and drummer Ray Ryneer at a Las Cruces practice studio and fell in love with the music they were writing. Travis was added to the band as the lead vocalist and they began playing the local club scene. Bassist Rob Hurd was brought into the fold and later Manning and Hurd ran into old friend, guitarist Miguel "Keeb" Romero. "Keeb" had been playing with a very popular underground NM band called "Asid Rane" at the time, which NME had played several gigs with over the past year. Romero brought in fellow Asid Rane guitarist Chris Coon and NME became a five-piece group. When the band started getting serious about the band being something bigger than their garages, they soon realized that the name NME was already taken, and the initials "N.M.E." had to become an acronym for something else if they wanted to keep it. The name that filled those initials came out of a drunken stupor one night. "We started throwing around lots of different NME ideas and eventually New Mexican Erection was kicked around"...Travis states, "It just wouldn''t go away and eventually stuck as the new name for N.M.E." Eventually Coon and Hurd left the band to pursue other interests and in November 1999, Steve "Bevo" Fardal was brought in on bass to fill the void left by Hurd, which is the line-up we see today.

In 1999 the band broke out of the Las Cruces/ El Paso scene and went on a quick 5-day tour to Arizona and California in support of their first release "Groovecore EP" which was recorded at Image Recording Studios in Las Cruces NM by Joel Parker, co-produced by Clif Warren.

In 2002 the band went back into the studio to create and record the album "Innuendo" where the
recording took a very long time due lack of experience and was finally completed in 2002. The band had continued playing in and around southwest regions of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California throughout the recording process, and later that same year NME went back on tour four more times. Eventually the band realized that they needed to record something new. Travis states "We got so lost in playing shows and trying to get our name out there that we lost site of where we were going. Eventually we realized that we were pushing an outdated album."

The actual process of recording "Co-dependent" started the first week in July 2004. This album was different from the rest. Travis puts it this way, "The entire concept for the album revolves around the relationship that we as a band have together. The songs are intimate looks into our minds. They are written about the things that piss us off, the things that screw us up, and the people who keep us going. For the first time we have written an album, not just a collection of songs. These songs are pieces of us."
The band plans on touring extensively in 2005 in support of "Co-Dependent" reaching out further and further across state lines to get their music across to the masses. Bands that NME have shared the stage with in the past include Skinlab, Hemlock Hostility, I.R.A.T.E. Fueled to Fire, and Wardog. The band has had it share of gigs that unfortunately did not turn out. "We were supposed to open for Grip Inc. (Dave Lombardo former drummer from Slayer) but they canceled the show the night before the gig" Travis states. "We were supposed to open for Prong...but same deal, cancellation. We went to Windowrock AZ. to open for Soulfly and yup...same deal...cancellation...but at least we saw them this time...they just split on the show, they said they were going to for showers and never came back."

Now, more people will have the opportunity to come up with one''s own definition of the band.
