Details:
Carla Joiner is a talented songwriter, singer and musician. Carla’s love for music has been obvious ever since she was a small child. Anyone who knows Carla knows if she is not singing she is humming. Music is definitely in her blood. Soon after Carla was born her mother and father moved to the mountains of West VA where she was surrounded by bluegrass. Her mother was raised in hard times in West VA, but also experienced a time of great freedom in music. Although, her mother had a significant amount of influence in her life, it would be the exposure if her grandfathers picking that would leave the lasting mark on Carla’s musical love just before her father moved them down to a small town in Georgia. Her father’s side of the family came from the mountains of North Carolina. With strong Southern Gospel roots, it would be Carla’s two Aunts that would nurture the down home voice Carla is known for. Of course, living in the south your whole life as Carla has automatically makes you a candidate for country music! Like all great recipes there always seems the chef has added a taste of something you just can’t put your finger on…well, with Carla that would have to be her older sister who must have been the biggest influence of all. I’m not sure if it was the blaring sound of rock & roll on a 45 or the crazy dance music that was played non stop in the Thompson household.
Last but not least, church would play a huge part in who she was and in who she would become. When Carla was eight years old she found the Lord and was saved in the back bedroom of her house. Soon after, she began to pressure the small town Pastor to let her sing. By age twelve, growing in confidence, she began to learn how to play the piano, however it wasn’t until she was fourteen when she was finally allowed to play in front of the congregation. The next five years of Carla’s life would take a bumpy road, these years started out good and Carla recorded a southern gospel album with the church group as “The Believers”. She also however would go on to write many songs including not only gospel but also country, rock and even a few rap’s. For the first time in her life the gifts and talents God had given her were under attack. She was definitely being pulled in two different directions. Singing and playing in bars would inevitably cost her the Sunday morning worship she grew up with and was eventually asked to step down from her position as singer and lead pianist. Through the Lords grace, continuos chastisement and the many prayers of others she would come to know the Lord in a new way and go on to make another album with “The Believers”. She later left the believers. Finding her own independence in the Lord she operated as worship leader in a few churches and later formed “New Spirit”. She had written songs in this time in her style of Christian music and recorded her latest album “Redeemed”.
