Ross Neilsen 2006 Biography

"Ross Neilsen''s passionate, sexy voice, far north from Louisiana, commanded this crowd''s attention with an intensity matching that of a New Orleans big-ticket event."
-Meghan Scott, Freelance Journalist

In November 2004, singer/songwriter, Ross Neilsen committed himself to a solo Blues career. Since then, the ten-year veteran of the Fredericton, N.B. music scene has been more than a little busy making a name for himself.

This hard working, self-managed artist booked and performed over 100 shows around the Maritimes, including multiple festivals such as: PaddleFest in St. Andrews and The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton. Amongst these dates were opening slots for Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, Guy Davis and Matt Minglewood. He has been featured in over half a dozen publications and made several television and radio appearances. To top it all off Ross has received two CBC Galaxy Rising Star awards since July 2005.

In October, Ross released his highly anticipated debut CD titled “Where I’m From”. Produced by Joel Leblanc (Hot Toddy) and James Gauthier (Medium Rare Productions), “Where I’m From” includes 13 tracks featuring 12 written by Ross. Using some of N.B.’s finest musical talent (Big Alice, Joel Leblanc and Thom Swift of Hot Toddy) Ross covers the full blues spectrum with songs like “New Stagger Lee Blues”, a solo delta style, and the funky Chicago beat of “Badlands”, written about his journey to Canada’s own badlands. Dry, hot and mysterious, Drumheller, Alberta. After showing he can honour tradition, Ross pushes the envelope with the stunning a cappella tune, “Source of Light” and slow ballad “Come Undone”. “Where I’m From” was released to critical acclaim and featured on two 2005 top ten lists: Wilfred Langmaid (Daily Gleaner) and Grant Kerr (Telegraph Journal) and most recently “Where I’m From” received an East Coast Music Award Nomination for best blues recording.

Having met his goals of regional touring and release of his debut CD, Ross has set his goals high for 2006. His hard-work-pays-off attitude will no doubt find him knocking on the doors of clubs in Ontario and Canada’s Western provinces as well as keeping up the relations he has made with his home, The Maritimes.

Whether performing in fifty seat nightclubs or in 1000 seat festival tents, Ross Neilsen’s high energy shows have garnered critical appraise. So keep your eyes open and expect to find Ross performing anywhere great blues is played and in a few shady places off the beaten path!
