Biographical Sketch
The recording of the Reminiscence CD Marks the beginning of the return of Nate Allen to one of his greatest loves, the music. Nate performed and recorded during the late 60’s & 70’s under the name “Na Allen”. He had six releases on Atco, Ronn, Janus and Pedestal labels. These attempts to market him as an R&B artist met with little success. With a masters degree in education he refused to play the role of the scuffling artist so he returned to the classroom as a teacher at the middle grade level in East Lansing, MI after he had spent the summer as the opening act for his sister, Miss Denise LaSalle in 1973. Nate also enrolled at Michigan State University as a doctoral candidate.
In 1976 Nate accepted his first leadership role in education as a principal in Muskegon Heights MI. There he remained until he retired from the Michigan Public School System in 1994. During the years in this area he performed with the area Civic Theater of Muskegon and Grand Heaven MI. Nate also owned and operated a small Bar/ Lounge called https://www.tradebit.comens (Just Plain Allen’s. It became known as “The Little Bar With A Distinct Personality”. Each weekend he featured some musical talent of a jazz / blues nature. Nate started to sing in the bar with some of the bands. In 1992 he became the featured vocalist with a jazz quartet called The New Connection and performed with them until he retired to Oklahoma City.
Nate worked one school term in OKC before accepting a principal Position in Irving TX. After his working hours were completed you could always find Nate where ever the music would lead him. Somewhere along the way he decided that he was going to sing again and this time he was going to do the music that he loved no matter what other might say or think.
This 16 track CD is the direct results of his thoughts and efforts. It is a collection of some of Nate’s favorite songs. This collection is about half Great American Standards and half Blues With A Bounce. According to Nate, he had to know how well he would be received if he returned to the scene doing the kind of music he had always loved and wanted to perform. He sincerely hopes that you will agree that he has a place here.
