Details:
Born Nancie Manzuk on July 29, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Raised Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She moved to New York City in the 1970’s, studied with Barry Harris, Frank Foster, Edward Boatner, and Jimmy Owens (with Jazzmobile). She sang as leader of her own quartets and quintets in and around town, as well as with big bands.

The groups and artists with whom she has performed include:
Barry Harris Jazz Ensemble, John Hendricks Vocalstra, Lionel Hampton and many others.

1989-she was given a scholarship to study in the Jazz Department at the New School University. Her own big band, the Nancie Banks Orchestra, was born in the school’s student big band which was led by Cecil Bridgewater. The result is an exhilarating, swinging, band which featured top notch musicians from the New York area. Music lovers around the country have been uplifted by her toe-tapping sound and invigorating arrangements.

This is Nancie’s first release as a leader. Her second release, BERT’S BLUES, also on CAP, can be found in this catalogue. Nancie has written lyrics and has done music preparations for Count Basie Orchestra, Jon Hendricks, George Benson and movie soundtracks. Her orchestra was called “one of the more exciting big bands to come down the pike in some time.” (Cadence Magazine)

Nancie passed away in November, 2002. Her music lives on through her recordings.
