If music and creative artistry is the rhythm by which one travels through life, then singer/songwriter Patrick Nagel is enjoying the ride. Hailing from the Northern California town of Ukiah, Patrick grew up in a rich culture of blues, rock, and contemporary folk. Exposed to, and sometimes performing with the likes of Holly Near, Robben Ford, and John Reischman, he was privileged to glimpse rare forms of musical artistry. These local influences along with well known giants such as Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and Mississippi John Hurt, helped shape a musical sensitivity that includes a wide variety of flavors that shows up in his composing. Most comfortable playing his acoustic guitar, his songs reflect various styles, from modern folk to blues to country and bluegrass to simple story songs. His latest CD, “Yearnings,” is a collection of original pieces that show this broad sensitivity. Backed by former Byrd and Flying Burrito Brother, Gene Parsons, on pedal steel, banjo, and high string guitar, as well as local cellist extraordinaire, Marsha Sloane, Patrick has created a richly acoustic sounding album with clear lead vocals, and textural harmonies.
Our lives are full of yearnings: for a better life, a return to home, recreated relationships, overcoming devastating loss, and a wish for time to slow down…just a little bit so we can catch our breath. The songs included in “Yearnings,” deal with all of this and more. You will see yourself embedded in the lyrics while you appreciate the emotional pull of the instrumentation. Truly this is Patrick’s finest effort to date. Don’t pass this one up. You’ll kick yourself later if you do.
