When I first gave a copy of my CD to my worst critics, Family and friends, the first thing they said was "
I thought that was Jimi Hendrix at first glance" and "all you need is a head band" and are trying to learn
how to play left handed so you could look like Hendrix?
And as much as I liked Jimi Hendrix style and music, out of respect I never once tried to play his music.
I''ve played with a lot of musicians in my time of which some could play Hendrix or even tried to be like
Hendrix. But they all lacked one thing, being left handed and I sometimes felt that they were envious of the fact that I was.
But nevertheless, I learned from my father very early in life that music is a lifestyle and everybody had
their own style. So I pretty much enjoyed watching other styles while developing my own.
Before Hendrix'' time, I grew up listening to my father''s style which was Jazz, if he wasn''t playing with cat''s like Miles, Coltrane, Getz, Stitz and many others, there was always Jazz music in our house.
Since we lived in the projects on the seventh floor, my father used to put the phonograph in the window
and crank it and everybody living in the front part of the building or passing by was hearing Jazz, but at that time didn''t know it was either Miles or Coltrane or Dizz or the Jazz messengers and many others.
Yes, me and my brothers were labeled, "yeah, your father''s the one who plays that jazz in the window
real loud". So music has just been a part of my soul from the beginning and my style has adapted to my
lifestyle. Like Miles went from Jazz to Fusion, but he lived it.
My father passed away when I was sixteen, but he also passed the baton onto me, so I dedicate all my
music to him.
