Brian hails from Harlow, UK and lives in northeast Ohio. He got there via protracted stays in New York City and Conway, Arkansas.
A Manly Hauling of Levers combines two sets of sessions recorded in Arkansas during 2004: at Sean Gray’s in Conway, and at Blue Chair in Austin. Like Brian’s earlier releases this one is song-oriented, often acoustic, and generally as rough-and-ready as possible. Unlike them, it features quite a few collaborators. For songwriting, Brian worked with Rod Nash, Reno John Gallaher, Paul Bonhomme and Paula Bonhomme. And a variety of Arkansas singers and musicians added to the sound. Says Brian:
“One of the wonderful things about the time I spent in Arkansas was the musical friendships I made. I have many happy memories – sitting around jamming with great guitar-pickers, fiddle-players, singers, accordion-players, and so on – people who played simply because they loved to, because that was how they expressed themselves, how they socialized. I’m reluctant to name names – there were so many I’m bound to miss someone out! I have to make special mention of a select few very special people, though: Buddy Case (the biggest influence on my guitar-playing this side of 1985); Kat and Greg (God bless you, mate); the girls (and long-suffering one guy!) from Vintage; Sean and Darien. Miss you all. Thanks also to the many people who came by Sean’s studio or Darien’s one to listen, to make kind remarks, and most of all, to play! Some of you will hear yourselves here: Jay, Vintage, Sherry, Brandon. Thanks everyone.”
