Confab 5 is a group of musicians living in different places, both composing and recording music on their own and collaborating together via the internet and the US Postal Service. We call our first project, Project 99. Project 99 is an iconic work of 99 separate musical pieces, created by five musicians within their own studios, and compiled to create a sprawling compendium of musical styles and studio techniques.
In under five minutes, the first five songs move through Renaissance lute music, 70s AOR pop rock, jungle drums and surf guitars, the British Invasion, and Tuvan throat singers intoning the mystic word "5".
Listening to this CD is similar to channel-surfing, except all the listener can do is hang on and let the wild stylistic shifts zap them quickly between styles, eras, decades, epochs! One can achieve true satori with this music! Guaranteed!
The Number Story:
Brian Kirk and Blake Helton were carrying a Fender Rhodes electric piano (the seventy-two, weighing about 174 pounds) up three flights of stairs in an apartment complex in Atlanta, Georgia. In order to figuratively lighten the load, Brian began to sing a song in rock anthem fashion, but with ''ninety-nine'' being the only lyric.
Soon after, at a pub in East Atlanta, Blake, Brian, Colin Bragg and Ed Johnson began jokingly discussing what it would be like to create 99 songs that didn’t have any other lyrical content other than the numerical value they were assigned. As they talked about it more and more, the guys decided it was a project worth taking on for the fun and challenge of it. One hundred songs: zero through ninety nine - four musicians. The rules were to keep them around a minute long and try to use only the number for the lyrics, regardless of the melody. Ed came up with a formula to divide the numbers randomly amongst the four of them so that each person got a sample of twenty five numbers. Once work began on Project: 99, Steve Moss got wind of it and wanted in on the action. He was given five of the numbers to work with and soon Steve became part of the project too.
A few simple rules were decided on in the beginning: each tune should be around a minute long, and the lyric content could only consist of the actual number assigned.
Each composer could create their music on their own, ask for the assistance of the other composers, and use anything to generate sound. and anything to record with. Due to proximity, Brian recorded his tracks in Colorado, Steve in Marietta, Georgia, and Colin, Blake and Edward in Atlanta, Georgia.
