Details:
Smooth Old-Fashioned High (aka Sloppy Box) Patrick Crozier (lead vocals) Nick McDowell (lead guitar) Evan Reed (guitar, vocals) Eric Ingersol (bass, vocals) Russ Lodge (drums) Griffin Gabourie (banjo, percussion, keyboard) Bryan Carpenter (saxophone) Joe Kroetch (percussion) Upon hearing Smooth Old-Fashioned High, many reviewers site the influence of contemporary artists such as The Dave Mathews Band, Ben Harper and Innocent Criminals, and The Barenaked Ladies. Yet, other critics focus on the groups deeper, blues roots: noticing elements of Santana, James Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Van Morrison, highlighting the sound which hits with the powerful delivery of Taj Mahal. Consider this bands aptitude for showmanship and the musical experience is teemed with emotion. Originating in Moscow, Idaho in 2002, Smooth Old-Fashioned High quickly earned a reputation for incendiary live performances. Recently, a performance on March 2nd at the Plantation resulted in the highest total sales the new owners have ever experienced. Other accolades include: Winning the Moscow City Battle of the Bands (fall 2004), and the University of Idaho I.F.C. Battle of the Bands (fall 2003). Also participating in many fundraisers, Smooth Old-Fashioned High helped raise $8,000 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation, and $1500 at a show dedicating proceeds to the Tsunami Relief fund. Patrick (vocalist) wails into the microphone with the intensity of Johnny Lang, while at other times he croons the audience in the style of Wilson Pickett. His charismatic stage presence demands the attention of everyone in the room. Whether playing the guitar behind his head or blending the styles of Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery for a jazzy solo feel, Nick (lead guitarist), feeds the fire of the this bands momentum. Dubbed smoky, Bryan Carpenters saxophone is smooth and adds a very distinct flavor. On the opposite side of the stage, Evan (guitarist), provides a solid counterpoint to both Patricks and Nicks blues foray. Rhythm section Eric, Russ, Griffin, and Joe, lay down the groove in a style that has been likened to the soul-groove rhythm sections of 70s funk recordings, yet they kick it hard when called to drive the band into a rock rally. Smooth Old-Fashioned High provides a diverse musical landscape to chill and relax to or dance until the bar closes its doors for the night. The sound is SOLID!
