Details:
Ram Ashreya Jha "Ramrang" was one of those extremely rare individuals
who simultaneously personified music; pursued an unapologetic quest for
excellence; exemplified a huge treasure of raagas, compositions and
knowledge; expected only the sublime; and built a rich experience through
painstaking labour and the highest calibre of academic interest. In the truest
sense of the term, Ramrang was a vaggeyakar.

Born in Bihar on 11 August 1928, Ramrang received early training from his
father Sukhdev Jha and uncle Madhusudan Jha. His extended and sustained
pedagogy came under Bholanath Bhatt, in whose Allahabad ashram Ramrang
spent 25 years mastering several forms of musical tradition. B. N. Thakar of
Allahabad and Habib Khan of Kirana were his mentors as well. Ramrang went on
to become the head of department of music at the Allahabad University from
1980 to 1989.

His colophon "Ramrang" has graced many a self-penned composition over the
span of more than 60 years of a prolific musical life. Ramrang''s mind was also
home to countless compositions and collections from various sources. He has
created many raagas as well. Aside from being a brilliant composer and a nuanced
performer, Ramrang was an exceptional teacher, whose illustrious students
include Dr. Geeta Banerjee and Shubha Mudgal.

Ramrang passed away on 01 January 2009 in Kolkata and the world of music
suffered a loss that was at once irreparable and irreplaceable.

In this tribute to the peerless Ramrang, we make a humble endeavour to
present his compositions and preserve his enduring legacy.

==================================

1. Yaman and Yaman Kalyan

Although inextricably linked to each other, Yaman and Yaman Kalyan are
two distinct raagas, with the latter''s augmented but occasional and judicious
use of the shuddha madhyam forming a sharp tangent against the former.
Ramrang''s exquisite bandish on Lord Shiva "devana deva mahaadeva" brings
to light the glory of Yaman as well as showcases his mastery of language and
poetry. Following it is his tribute to the guru in Yaman Kalyan. Notice the subtle
and clever placement of the shuddha madhyam.

2. Tilak Kamod

The turning point in the great Indian epic Mahabharata is the episode
where Draupadi is wantonly disrobed and disgraced by the Kauravas.
With her elders and her own husbands turning a blind eye towards her plight,
and with nowhere else to turn, Draupadi plaintively beseeches Lord Krishna
to rescue her dignity, and Lord Krishna promptly does so. Ramrang
captures this entire episode brilliantly in two bandish''es with concise,
apposite and vivid wording. The first bandish "mero pata raakho muraari"
in Roopak is Draupadi''s lament and the second, "begi begi aaye hari" in
drt Ektaal, is Lord Krishna''s response. With such poetry it is not difficult to
miss Ramrang''s superb use and presentation of raaga Tilak Kamod itself,
delicately utilising the raaga to portray grief followed by joy.

3. Shree

A raaga of deeply introspective mien, Shree of the Purvi thaat bears
resemblance to the scale-congruent and arguably more popular Purya
Dhanashri but is of a nature quite uniquely its own. Ramrang''s
bandish "guru ke paga pariye" in Teentaal is a superior interpretation
of Shree, bringing forth its meenD-laden disposition, along with the bandish''s
ingenious usage of a phase-shifted sam.

4. Kirwani

Kirwani is an import from the Karnatic tradition. In this sampurna raaga
Ramrang''s sprightly bandish "mukuTa vaaroon" in drt Ektaal exemplifies
the beauty of the raaga.

5. Bilaskhani Todi

Fabled to be a creation of Tansen following the premature demise of his son,
the great raaga Bilaskhani Todi is an exceedingly beautiful combination of
the thaats Bhairavi and Todi, with meenDs playing a crucial role in its
delineation. Ramrang''s striking bandish "jagadambikaa ambikaa" in Teentaal
pays tribute to goddess Durga.
