Details:
Seth Moore, now a resident of Murfreesboro TN, spent most of his youth pushing away the country music that surrounded him in the hills of Tennessee. A geeky kid of hippie descent, Seth didn''t acclimate well to his rural environment. “When I was a kid I mainly listened to psych rock and British invasion records. It wasn''t until I left home for college that I really learned to appreciate country music. I felt outcast by the people who listened to it, so I never gave country a chance. But as an adult I''ve found a real connection to the music I heard as a child. Now when I listen to Hank Williams or the Louvin Brothers I feel a kind of catharsis that I don''t think I could find in any other music – it''s like finding the bully that picked on you when you were little and giving him a big hug.”
Moore''s songs tend to center around moments of catharsis. The settings can be pretty dark: Chicken on the Tracks deals with suicide, Crick in My Neck takes you into a ghostly attic of lingering memory, and the title of This Music is Killing Me speaks for itself. But somehow Moore always finds a solution to the problem he presents. A good example of this is Perfect Roommate, where he decides that living alone isn''t so bad, after all. “Songwriting is therapeutic, for sure. It''s how I deal with the world. I don''t expect everyone to relate to everything I do, but at the same time, I think people are more like each other than they would normally care to admit. We are all strange and unique, but we also go through a lot of the same things. So I write for myself but I share my music with others because, well – if writing a song helps me through my hard times, maybe it will help you through yours.”
Moore, who studied recording at Middle Tennessee State University, produced the album at home with budget equipment. “Considering that this is the first album I''ve ever recorded, I think I''ve done a pretty good job. I wouldn''t call it hi-fi, but I wouldn''t call it lo-fi, either. I tried a lot of different things.” Most people who have seen Seth live have only seen the singer-songwriter with a guitar, but on the record Moore adds delayed piano, clarinet, melodica, live and programmed drums, synthesizers, samples, cell phones, and circuit bent toys. Though Moore''s songs are often simple and direct, there is a good amount of musical experimentation on this record. Seth also enlists several Murfreesboro creatives to help flesh things out. Contributors include Casey Strength on electric and bass guitar, Dave Massey on electric guitar, Chad Corgan on slide guitar, clarinet and synthesizers, Chris Freeman on bass and accordion, Justin Hickerson on drums, and Harlan Smith on violin. “This record wouldn''t be what it is without the help of several talented people. Thanks, everybody!”
