A perfect mashup of deep influences enlighten singer/songwriter Effi Kalas'' rhythmic World Alt-Rock: a New England childhood among eclectic music lovers… restlessness and introspection…classical training…romance and heartbreak…her pure Greek heritage and her irresistible attraction to Greek music.

Wait one hot minute – what’s that about Greek music?

Effi’s a first generation American who grew up in a home where music was king – her grandfather was an opera singer, and her mother inherited his voice. She began learning classical piano when she was a little kid –and listened to U2, Hendrix, Jeff Buckley (she was obsessed), blues and Led Zeppelin, feeling each artist or band for something different: Zeppelin’s genre-defying, driving rhythms and powerful vocals, Buckley’s cred as a tunesmith, U2’s melodics. The other music she loved and absorbed was the traditional Greek music she heard at home or on many trips to her parents’ birthplace in Athens.

Listen to Effi’s tunes and you’ll hear phat grooves, melodic vocals, lyrics that ask the “bigger questions” and powerful, unusual rhythms that mark her hot-blooded lineage. “Greeks are not reserved people,” Effi explains, “It’s an extremely passionate culture, full of loud conversations - and a very rich history of vocalists - many vocalists who are so incredibly beautiful. The unusual meters… 9/4 and 5/4…the delay of the 5 –it’s a built-in drama that’s so different and almost too passionate for U.S. standards.”

Almost too passionate, but she’s found a willing audience. Influenced by an ancient culture, and selling it electronically? YEAH! Effi is one of the first artists who utilized we7, the U.K. based, advertising-supported free music streaming service founded by Peter Gabriel. Almost all the promotion and sales of Effi’s current recording, Something More, happen through digital downloads negotiated via we7, iTunes and social networking connections via Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Effi’s working on her third recording, and she plans to go deeper down that path – and continue connecting with an audience drawn to her passionate sound.

“Ya know, sometimes I love a traditional rock line, and other times, it’s like I can’t deny the attraction of that sexy layering of vocal over guitar and odd rhythms – it’s that longing that’s so connected to the Mediterranean sound…and I love working with other American musicians who have strong ties to another culture. It’s a short cut I love to take!” She starts writing a rhythm or a groove, and a melody will follow. Lyrics begin with a thought or an idea that’s been floating around; she writes about things that concern her: sometimes her lyrics speak to romance or friendship, sometimes to practical concerns- like the music business- and sometimes to the bigger picture – like why are we on the planet?

“ I wish there were more room for arts…I wish honest music had more of a center piece…one must have faith in finding an audience….I don’t want to focus on what pisses me off….I want to say good things and do good things…..” These are all themes that are on Effi’s mind now.

Effi almost became a scientist, sort of following in her parents’ footsteps (they are both engineers), and thinking it was the practical thing to do. When she picked up the guitar in college, it really felt right to her –“and,” Effi says practically, “it was portable!” One day, a broken heart drove her to start composing. It also caused her to look around and declare, “ART IS THE GREATEST THING THERE IS!”

Bring it!
