Details:
The four founder members of Direct Drive....Rob Williams, Pete Quinton, Mick Ward and Mick Hammond (Bones) began playing music together in a band called Ritual in the late 1970’s
The band’s line up gradually changed, one constant being the aforementioned members who constituted the rhythm section, which eventually formed the core of Direct Drive.
They released their first single ‘ Don’t Depend On Me/ Time Machine’ in 1980 on Oval Records with Paul Hardcastle on keyboards and Derek Green on lead vocals. Although the A side was ‘Don’t Depend on Me’ it was ‘Time Machine’ which picked up a lot of airplay mainly on the soul pirate stations such as Horizon and JFM.
They followed this up with ‘Time’s Running Out’
Paul and Derek then decided to pursue a career as a duet and left to form First Light ....... Direct Drive then used several keyboard players and vocalists, two notable regulars being, Martin Lascelles (on keyboards) and Alvin Brown (on vocals).
During this time, Paul continued to be involved with the band doing some live work, playing keyboards.
In 1982 Direct Drive decided to hold auditions for a permanent lead vocalist. Helen Rogers was one of the singers auditioned. She had been singing with a reggae band (whose line up evolved into reggae chart toppers Natural Touch), and Direct Drive thought that her Lovers Rock influenced vocal style would add something unique to their Brit Funk sound. The band’s first release with Helen on lead vocals was ‘In The Middle of Spring’, produced by Nigel Wright and released on Les McCouchen’s Passion label.
Around this time Mick Hammond left the band.
The band decided to set up their own record label, DDR Records, on which they released ‘Pass the Paper’, which was a popular club hit.
Their next release was a smash hit for the band....the track ‘Anything’ (initially released on DDR) hit the Black Echoes Soul Chart No 1 spot for several weeks over the Christmas period 1984/85. Due to the runaway success of the song the band signed to Polydor/ Boiling Point who took over production and distribution of the single.
Polydor instigated a remix of the track by Mark King of Level 42...Disappointed with this remix, the band insisted on their former keyboard player and old friend Paul Hardcastle remixing the song also.
Polydor decided to put these remixes on the B side of the follow up single ‘ABC Falling in Love’s Not Easy’ (1985)
Parting company with Polydor, Drive Drive decided to continue with their own label DDR and Production Company BPM.
The last two tracks Direct Drive released were ‘I Need Some Sunshine’ (1985) and ‘Oh Yeah’ (1986) both on the DDR label
Although they parted company as band at this time, they remained good friends.....
