Details:
Chattanooga’s Barefoot Nellie & Co. is a bluegrass group that is sure to impress. With the standard bluegrass band set-up, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and bass, these musicians manage to blend traditional sounds with more progressive ones. What is created is music that is both accessible and innovative, a successful fusion of things old and new.
Though the band members spend their daytime hours doing everything from appraising houses to fighting fires, they spend their evenings doing what they really love: making music together, and great music at that, These five musicians have only been playing together as a group for a year, but you wouldn’t know it upon hearing them play. “It feels like we’ve been playing together for 10 years,” said fiddle player, August Bruce. “[Playing with these guys] feels like home. We felt an instant connection the first time we hit a note together.”
The musical chemistry between these pickers is evident, and each demonstrates both instrumental and vocal competency. Though all five band members sing, it seems that guitarist, Josh Hixson and fiddle player, August Bruce take the lead most often. Hixson, one of the newest band members, has a voice well-suited for bluegrass: raw and just the right amount of gritty. Bruce’s voice is equally loveable. She consistently delivers vocals that are believable, heartfelt and sweet as honey. Her fiddle playing is just as impressive as her voice, with demonstrated technique and near flawless tone.
Each player adds a little spice to the mix, bringing different strengths and perspectives to the table. Hixson’s guitar playing, obviously influenced by the great Tony Rice, keeps things even and driving. Banjo player, Dewayne Smith, livens things up with tasteful melodic runs. Larry Rapier, on mandolin, demonstrates a unique, bouncy style that walks the line between traditional and contemporary. And bass player, Eric Bruce, holds it all together, always keeping things groovy and fun.
In 2009, Barefoot Nellie & Co. performed at various private parties, weddings, festivals and corporate events. 2010 proved to be even more exciting with winning the White Oak Mountain Bluegrass Band Contest and being asked to perform on PBS TV Series Song of the Mountains. Now, 2011 is already filling up with bookings! The band is excited about what’s to come this year, and ready to show everyone what they can do.
