Founded in 2002, Shtreiml, named for the traditional furry hat worn by Chassidic Jews, blends klezmer, gypsy and jazz to create a vibrant sound that is at once Eastern European Folk Music and down-home Blues. Shtreiml''s debut album, Harmonica Galitzianer , showcases bandleader Jason Rosenblatt''s unique approach to playing the 10-hole diatonic harmonica or "blues harp." Using recently devised techniques pioneered by harmonica master Howard Levy, Rosenblatt takes the instrument generally associated with the blues and fits it neatly into an Eastern European context. Along with Hip-hop klezmer guru Josh Dolgin and Yiddish folksong revivalist Abby Rosenblatt, the group has carefully researched old sheet music and vinyl recordings, in order to develop a repertoire that is at once old-time klezmer and fresh to the ears of even the most seasoned listener.
Shtreiml features Jason Rosenblatt (harmonica, piano), Josh Dolgin (accordion), Abby Rosenblatt (vocals), Ariel Harrod (bass), Thierry Arsenault (drums).
