Details:
The Tree People are a creative acoustic music ensemble originally formed in the late 1970''s in Eugene, Oregon. Founding members are composer, singer, songwriter, acoustic guitarist Stephen Cohen and Jeff Stier, who plays recorders, flute and percussion. They performed, at times with 3rd and 4th members, at coffee houses, concerts and festivals in the Eugene area for 7 years, including performances at the Home Fried Truck Stop, the Loft, the WOW Hall, the Willamette Valley Folk Festival, and the Oregon Country Fair. They recorded two albums, "The Tree People", in 1979 and "Human Voices" in 1984.
After Jeff Stier moved to Washington D.C. to work in the political arena in the mid 1980''s, the Tree People disbanded, but founding member Stephen Cohen continued to compose music, write songs, perform and record. Stephen moved to Portland, Oregon in the mid 1990''s and recorded 3 albums, "Real Life and Fiction" in 2000, "Stephen and the Talk Talk Band"
in 2004 and his nationally acclaimed album for children and adults,"Here Comes the Band" in 2006. He performed at concerts and festivals across the United States, including performances at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Long Island Children''s Museum, and was an award winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. He also designed and created original sculptural percussion instruments, and did interactive performances, workshops and residencies at schools, community centers and museums.
Meanwhile, the first Tree People album, originally release in vinyl and sold only in Eugene, Oregon. somehow appeared across the ocean, and was discovered worldwide 25 years after it was first recorded. Stephen was contacted, first by record collectors, then by record companies, leading to a CD reissue of "The Tree People" by Tiliqua Records of Japan, a vinyl reissue of "The Tree People" by Guerssen Records of Spain, CD and vinyl reissues of "Human Voices" by Guerssen Records, and Stephen''s solo acoustic guitar piece from "The Tree People", "No More School", included in "Wayfaring Strangers- Guitar Soli", "a precious release that brings to life fourteen lost recordings from some of the finest acoustic innovators in American history", by the Chicago record company The Numero Group. The Tree People, whose original music was hard to classify the first time around, were now being called "Fathers of Freak Folk" and "Psych Folk Pioneers".
And then the second life of the Tree People began. Stephen and Jeff, with new Tree People member double bass player Rich Hinrichsen, began rehearsing, creating new arrangements of old Tree People material, creating and recording new music, and performing in concerts and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest, including performances at the Mississippi Studios, the White Eagle, Performance Works Northwest and the Old Church in Portland, the Matrix in Chehalis, Washington, the Upstage in Port Townsend, Washington and the Arts in Nature Festival and the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. They did two Creative Residencies at Centrum, an arts organization in Port Townsend, Washington, where Stephen and Rich have started work on the "Cistern Symphony", a symphony being created deep underground in the Dan Harpole Cistern in Fort Worden, up the hill from Centrum.
The Tree People will be performing in March of 2011 at the Musique Disperses Festival in Spain. Guerssen Records of Spain released released CD and vinyl editions of a new, 3rd and last Tree People album, "It''s My Story", in 2010. After the festival performance in Spain, Jeff Stier will be retiring from the performing life, but the music of the Tree People will live on through their 3 recordings. And Stephen Cohen and Rich Hinrichsen will create, perform and record new music, with some new band members under a new name, and will perform fresh versions of some Tree People songs as well. The adventure continues!
