Karen Nichols reaffirms her place at the forefront of songwriters and uniquely versatile singer/keyboardists with this collection of stunning original songs and arranged traditional tunes.
Evocative of life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, “Mountain People” is a snapshot of the music and culture Karen grew up in and returned to later in life after spending many years in California. Her ability to echo the lingering ways of rural people, and their ties across the sea and time is extraordinarily poetic. Her musical diversity and technical prowess on the keyboard is undeniable. The title song won the Poetry Society of Virginia’s 2003 contest, in the mountain category, and she subsequently set it to music. Decidedly Celtic in nature, with a jazz influence on some songs, this CD material represents a heartfelt longing, a perspective on times gone by and the wish for simplicity again, a deep faith in the goodness of people and the source of that goodness, and a sense of history. It is plaintive, intense, inspired from a deep other-worldly, other time and place….and a collection of songs that will be vividly experienced by the senses. Some of the melodies to her originals echo traditional songs at times, but came deep from a well within that has been steeped in such music since childhood.
