On November 20, 2009 a friend asked me if I would be willing to come by and video a friend''s show at Barnes and Noble. I had heard the musician''s name around town a few times before and was wanting to see what he was all about. I had a new Canon 5D DSLR and was looking to test drive it, so I agreed. That night Josh Sizemore''s music captured my heart and hasn''t let go since. It was as if the man had read my personal journal and penned it in a song. Over the past year I have had the pleasure to follow Josh through a personal journey of songwriting, filmmaking, and most of all friendship. This bootleg is the story of that journey.
For me it is like my films. A journey that tells a story. A story of the birth of music. A story of the creation of a band. A story that is still being written. A story of songs that were created in front of audiences, many times without them knowing it was happening in front of them.
I have slowly built up a playlist of Josh''s music and carried it with me in my pocket. I now want to share that playlist with the rest of the world. This is not a perfectly polished list, but it is a list that is intimate and raw. At times it is acoustic and others it is plugged.
The album is bookended with the first performances I recorded of Josh, "Bleeding Through" and "Hollywood Clown," at Barnes and Noble in Christiansburg, Virginia. It features bassist Jason Lee Paljug. I''ve also included the story of "Hollywood Clown" from that night''s performance.
We then meet Josh as Aerros. "Creationition''s" first performance at Lucie Monroe''s features Taylor Greenquist on acoustic and James Gray on percussion with an addictive run on the sleigh bells and a quaint triangle. "Creationition" then gets plugged in with Aerros at Cabo Fish Taco. This time with Jamie Gardner behind a kit and Taylor Greenquist now on bass. We then meet a few old friends in "Carte de Visite," "Dock''s of Potter''s Field," and "King of Crows," with the most memorable being Crows at over 10 minutes featuring epic laid back solos. The Cabo Fish Taco performance is finished off with a smooth ride through the kuiper belt and the songwriting performance of "Colors."
"Colors" is then revisited from the Palisades in Eggleston, Virginia now completely penned and this time acoustic. Matt Croushorn has now jumped on board with Josh and the duo is known as Eight More Planets. David Feldman and his magically melodious cello joins the crew on this solar tour. After getting with "The Program" we enjoy another songwriting performance of what I have titled "Instrumental Charlie" that ultimately becomes the Charlie Sheen biographical "Poor Charlie."
Josh then recorded "If You Were Me" dropped down a gear from Cambria Studios which really amounted to my digital recorder in the backseat of his Topaz. Josh played this song for me at my Dad''s funeral and it really spoke volumes to me and did for me what music does best - heal. Over the course of the year Josh also laid down a track for me on my short film "Boots." Same studio, different room - this time his bathroom. This gig required Josh to polish off the ol'' brass and crack his lip on his trumpet. If you stick around long enough you just might here the pussy cat walk by.
As I said a journey. Thanks for taking a walk with us through 2010 and we look forward to seeing you on the road to come.
