Details:
Martin Mathelier was born in Monrovia Liberia on June 25 1963, to Lucien and Marie Therese Mathelier both of Haitian origin. In 1968, along with his family, he moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti where he lived for most of his formative years.

Surrounded by artists all his life, Martin almost had no choice but to be a musician and painter. He learned to play the guitar by accompanying his older brother the well-known Haitian Guitar virtuoso Marc Mathelier. While his friends were occupied with the usual adolescent issues, Martin was constantly learning the art of Jazz specially the Brazilian style of Bossa Nova. The guitar became his best method of communication and his way to express his love and sentiments. He was also inspired by Haitian artists Jacky Ambroise and the great jazz guitarist Ernest Fievre.

In 1981, along with friends Benoit Belizaire, Rommel Marseille and Eddy Philippe, he founded the group Pijama in New York, which later became Vibes. The band lasted for approximately 15 years playing the Haitian style of Kompa music. Their album “Kompamania” was both a commercial and critically acclaimed success.

After the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12 2010, Martin wanted to find a way to help his adopted homeland. His goal is to provide financial support to a tangible and credible organization; that is why he selected to work with the Institute Montfort of Haiti. The institute is the only school in Haiti specializing in providing education to children who are deaf and/or blind. Martin is hoping for your support to help raise funds for this humanitarian organization.

The tragedy in Haiti inspired Martin to produce this Smooth Afro Jazz and Caribbean bossa album as a way to honor the victims of the earthquake. The title of the CD is “Take me back home”. All proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to Institute Montfort of Haiti.
