Details:
In the “Americas”, there are many First Nations tribes. From the top of the Arctic to the tip of Chile, and the Caribbean in between, colonization has decimated many of our Indigenous tribes, leaving a remnant to carry on the traditions of our culture. The Taino and Karina populations diminished drastically, as a result of massacres perpetrated by European colonists. The trail of tears extended beyond the shores of Turtle Island, across the Caribbean Sea, when slave ships, carrying Native Americans from seven known tribes, made their way to several Caribbean islands to replenish the dwindling slave labour. Many First Nations tribes have suffered the effects of colonization to the extent that they are erroneously referred to as being “extinct”, throughout the pages of history. We are here to dispel those lies. We are the Taino and Karina people, and we cry out on behalf of our ancestors…. “IATIWA YAHA!!!!” (“WE ARE HERE!!!!”).

****************
“Okama” is a Taino First Nation word meaning “listen” or “hear”. We are, Gerard (Abouyou), Peta-Gay (Tayaliti), Gesse-Lea (Ouellechi) and Israel-Rain (Malacaya) Roberts, and we chose this name because it is time for the nations to “listen and hear”. Gerard and I (Peta-Gay) are Karina and Taino First Nations, respectively. We are both of mixed heritage, and endeavour to walk with dignity in the fullness of who the Creator has designed us to be and train our children to do the same. The Taino and Karina, or Kalinago people, are of the Arawakan language group of the Americas. The Caribbean derived its name from the derogatory title “Carib”, given to the Karina people by European settlers. As a family we want to redeem our culture and customs in light of our relationship with Yeshua (Jesus), the tribal man, who is the One and only begotten Son of Yahweh the Creator.

All songs on the CD were inspired by Creator-Father and we are so thankful for his mercy and grace.

We dedicate the song “I Forgive”, to the over-comers of the “Indian” residential/boarding schools, their children and their parents, to the memory of those who died in the schools and all their family members, and finally, to everyone who has been hurt by another. “I Forgive”, is more than a song. It is a journey; a journey of freedom for those who are willing to forgive those who have caused them pain in some way. Offering forgiveness does not excuse the perpetrator but it frees the one who has been violated and speeds up the healing process. We must forgive; not just for OUR sake but for the sake of the NEXT GENERATION. If we don’t forgive, we pass on our bitterness and hatred to them. We pray you will find freedom as you “listen” and “hear” what the spirit of the Lord is saying through the music and lyrics.

“Heya” is a Hebrew word meaning “I Am” and is used in many tribal chants. It encompasses the 365 names of God and it was used when He told Moses to tell Pharaoh who sent him. “Guatu Cu” – means “sacred fire” in the Taino language. “Ni, Hura, Guatu” means “water, wind, fire”
