n 1985 Surina left her native San Francisco for Austin. After kicking around the country circuit with Dave Prather, she decided to form a "San Francisco meets Austin" trio. So the two teamed up with Texas drummer Dave Fore and "Surina and the Daves" was born. The name was a play on the popular band "Katrina and The Waves". Not many people got the joke. Dave, Dave, and Surina all sang and shared songwriting credits. Surina fronted the band, being better looking than either Dave. She sang a great song called "Little Things Don''t Mean A Lot" by Dave Prather. It''s about, well you can figure that out for yourself. Dave Fore penned "Hot Head" about his short fuse and his inability to back it up.
Surina and the Daves had the power of a punk band, but their strong hooks also puts them squarely in the pop category. The band played clubs like the legendary Back Room, and had a respectable following in Austin. Their pop sensibilities caught the attention of producer Stan Coppenger and they subsequently recorded "What a Difference a Dave Makes!".
In 2010 the band unexpectedly experienced a resurgence in popularity, so by popular demand you are able to experience this re-release of "What a Difference a Dave Makes!". It is available on CDBaby and iTunes.
Surina is pretty cool but wasn''t crazy about Austin, probably because she is from San Francisco where it is a tad cooler. So after two years Surina and The Daves disbanded. Surina moved backed to her beloved San Francisco and retired to her trailer home with 27 cats. Dave Prather is a Walmart greeter and Dave Fore is writing his memoirs about his days as a fortune cookie writer.
